Bank of America Volunteers at the ReMaker Space

They say many hands make light work — and boy, did the team at Bank of America prove it. We were thrilled to welcome a group of dedicated Bank of America volunteers to roll up their sleeves and help us get the ReMaker Space ready in time for its ribbon cutting.

This beautiful new workshop (inside our San Luis Obispo ReStore) will serve as a community hub for creativity, repair, and DIY — a place where neighbors can bring old furniture back to life, learn new skills, and reimagine what “used” can become.

Transforming a space like this doesn’t happen with dreams alone. From clearing clutter to organizing stations, the groundwork is vital. The Bank of America volunteers stepped in at just the right moment to help us:

  • Organize the tool area — creating a user-friendly layout so folks can more easily find what they need
  • Clean, sort, and label — making sure everything’s in its place (and stays there)
  • Set up stations — defining zones for sanding, painting, refinishing, and more

Because of their help, the ReMaker Space started to feel like ours — ready for the grand opening.

What stood out was more than just hammering and sorting. It was community coming together. The Bank of America volunteers didn’t just help us with labor; they helped build relationships:

Their presence reminded us that building community is as much about people as it is about projects.

They asked about who uses the space and why — making it clear they saw our purpose.

They shared laughs, ideas, and pride as they saw a dusty corner become something beautiful.
For those who aren’t yet familiar: the ReMaker Space is a hands-on workshop located at our SLO ReStore, equipped with both tools and materials. It’s designed so community members — whether seasoned makers or first-time DIYers — can repair furniture, build new pieces, or learn new skills.

To use power tools, folks go through a free 5-hour “Habitat Competent Person” training.

We owe the space to support from the Rotary Club of SLO and a generous donation from volunteer Steve Urbani.


Thanks to team efforts like the ones we got from Bank of America, the space is ready (or nearly so) to show off. Our ribbon cutting is set for September 30 at 4:00 p.m. at the SLO ReStore (2790 Broad Street).
