Get to know Habitat SLO – Board Chair Truitt Vance
Truitt Vance has been an integral member of the Habitat SLO board for two years, assuming the role of Board Chair in December of the 2023. Despite his relatively limited experience in board leadership, he embraces the challenge with enthusiasm and commitment. He is recognized for his dedication to illuminating the critical challenges faced by the organization while fostering a culture of accountability and safety. Under his leadership, Truitt has focused on encouraging open dialogue and ensuring that every individual can realize their full potential within their roles. His vision is to leave a legacy marked by courage and resilience, paving the way for a future of progress and sustainability for Habitat SLO.
Truitt is deeply influenced by the Habitat SLO core value of connection. He believes that human experience is fundamentally shaped by our relationships and our connection to something greater than ourselves. Through his work with Habitat SLO, Truitt is committed to nurturing meaningful relationships that foster growth and unity, both within the organization and the communities it serves.
Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, and raised in rural Idaho, Truitt now resides in Atascadero, California, with his wife Heidi and their three children, Gracie, Lucas, and Lily. His priority is spending quality time with his family before his children leave for their own journeys. His career in engineering has been complemented by a lifelong passion for construction, which began at age 13 when he first started framing houses. Truitt considers himself a builder not only of homes but also of relationships and meaningful professional achievements.
Witnessing others succeed through collaboration and shared experiences is what truly inspires him and keeps him motivated. Truitt’s motivation has evolved from focusing on professional accomplishments to valuing the results of his relationships. He finds great fulfillment in understanding others and building connections that support mutual growth.
Truitt’s dedication to Habitat SLO is driven by his strong belief in the organization’s mission. He particularly resonates with the volunteer labor aspect of Habitat’s construction programs, viewing it as a vital element of community building. He believes that everyone, regardless of their level of success, benefits from assistance at some point. He sees the balance of help and self-reliance as crucial for fostering strong relationships and values within the community, thereby creating a sense of unity and pride.
One of Truitt’s aspirations is to increase awareness of the impactful work being done at Habitat SLO’s Restores. These facilities are invaluable resources for repurposing building materials and home goods in an affordable and environmentally friendly manner. The Restores exemplify Habitat’s dedication to sustainable practices and community building, offering opportunities for everyone, regardless of their financial situation, to benefit from these practices. Truitt believes that this aspect of Habitat SLO’s work deserves greater recognition for its role in fostering community resilience and resourcefulness.
