This fall, Gustavo Ocampo is trading in the Central Coast’s salty breeze for the buzz of the Bay Area as he heads to UC Berkeley to pursue a double major in Political Science and either International Relations or Ethnic Studies. It’s a move filled with excitement, ambition, and a deep appreciation for where he came from.

“Growing up in a small town on the Central Coast has shaped who I am,” Gustavo says. “But I’m ready to step outside my comfort zone and immerse myself in the energy and diversity of a big city.”

At Berkeley, Gustavo looks forward to meeting new people, experiencing different cultures, and discovering the opportunities that come with a fast-paced, diverse environment. But as excited as he is for what’s next, he’s also carrying a lot of love with him.

“Without a doubt, I’ll miss the sense of community. The Central Coast is full of people who genuinely care for one another. I’ll carry that warmth with me wherever I go—along with the amazing beaches, food, and coffee!”

Gustavo spent part of his summer interning with Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County, gaining real-world experience and insight into how small acts of service create big change.

“What I’ve loved most is the number of experiences. Whether I’m helping at a ReStore or tabling at an event, I’ve seen firsthand how every small effort contributes to a larger mission.”

And the most surprising part of his internship? Witnessing the generosity of the community.

“It’s eye-opening how giving people are—donating time, belongings, or skills. It’s made me even more hopeful and excited about the kind of change we can build together.”

When Gustavo isn’t studying or serving with Habitat, you can find him exploring new coffee shops, hanging out with friends, watching reality TV, and volunteering with local nonprofits. Giving back is something he’s truly passionate about.
