Volunteer

Volunteers provide the essential heart and hands of our programs.
Our work is possible thanks to the generous support of volunteers and donors who ensure the success of all our programs. We invite anyone committed to the vision that all people should have access to decent, affordable housing, and safe, healthy communities to support our work by volunteering with us. We maintain an open door policy welcoming applicants, donors, and volunteers from all backgrounds and affiliations. No experience is necessary to volunteer; we welcome volunteers of all skill levels and interests to join us as we work to fulfill our mission. All volunteers must be 18 years or older.
Volunteer to help build strength, stability, and self-reliance in San Luis Obispo County today!
Program Volunteers
Volunteering in one of our programs is a rewarding way to serve our community while learning valuable skills, and building meaningful relationships. Under the supervision of qualified leaders, our program volunteers often work alongside partner families to create safe, decent, and affordable housing in our community.
Build Day Volunteers
Our Homeownership & Building Program, offers designated Build Days when individuals or groups participate in the construction of a new home for our Habitat Partner Families. Build Days are 4 to 8-hour commitments, and can accommodate 20-30 volunteers performing light-duty projects on a construction site in support of a larger build project. Build Day projects might involve painting, light carpentry, light plumbing, finish work, site clean-up, landscaping and more.
Learn more about sponsoring a Build Day on our Partner page.
Playhouse Build Volunteers
In a Playhouse Build, a sponsoring organization, business, or group coordinates volunteers to paint and construct a playhouse, which is then donated to a deserving family or resold in our ReStore. Playhouse Builds are 6-hour commitments, and can accommodate up to 10 volunteers per playhouse.
Construction Leadership Volunteers and Referred Contractors
Many Habitat projects require a licensed contractor or qualified crew leader to provide on-site leadership and expertise. Construction leadership volunteers may work independently or alongside other volunteers on a program activity.
We also maintain a roster of vetted, licensed contractors who are willing to work with Habitat Partner families in a time of need. For more information or to apply for this roster, please contact build@habitatslo.org.
Home Preservation & Neighborhood Revitalization Program Volunteers
Our Home Preservation and Neighborhood Revitalization programs require volunteers with a variety of skillsets and experiences. As volunteer shifts for these programs become available, they will be posted to our Volunteer Calendar.
Administrative Volunteers
If you are interested in supporting the “behind the scenes” work that makes our programs and operations possible, consider applying as an administrative volunteer. Administrative volunteers may be skilled in photography, financial literacy, event coordination or planning, office support, data entry, and more. Share your special skills with us and we’ll find a great way for you to give back to your community.
If you’d like to make a donation of in-kind products or services, visit our donate page or contact development@habitatslo.org for more information.
Committee Members
Committee work is the key to the success of our board initiatives. We welcome volunteers to our committees from community members with relevant experience or expertise, and a heart for the residents of San Luis Obispo County. For more information or to apply for a Board of Directors Committee, visit our committee page.

ReStore Volunteers
Each ReStore is managed by full-time employees who will guide and support volunteers during their shift. Dedicated ReStore volunteers provide valuable services throughout the store including cashiering, showroom organization, donation clean-up and preparation, merchandise pricing and management, and donation pickup as needed.
Individuals and groups are welcome to volunteer in our ReStores.
